the problem i am having is that when i turn the computer on the monitor lights up the computer boots up but the monitor does not display anything. It started with vertical lines on the monitor then the screen will go out. I will turn the computer again the monitor worked but after 5-10 minutes the screen will go off again. it did that for a day or two, now the laptop will boot but the monitor lights up but will not display anything. is there a way I can hook up an external montior to see if it is the monitor or a hardware problem

Uh, unplug the current monitor and plug in a new one? It's probably the PSU or graphics card though.
