Default Mouse / Desk Query

Reet, was considering getting a new desk, as my current one is way too big, gets cluttered and takes an eternity to organize.

I've been looking at some nice glass tables, I know about the dust problem but the smoked glass range of tables just look too good to choose a wooden one over them.

My only question is the compatibility with an optical mouse. My mate said because it's glass the signals sent by the mouse won't bounce, and therefore not be received by the mouse, therefore requiring a mouse mat. I don't really want to go back to buying mouse mats, they're so Windows 95. I'm 90% sure he's right in saying the mouse won't work, but is it true? And are there any alternatives than just using a mouse mat, or would I be better just getting a non-glass desk?

That'd look ridiculous. How would I attach it to the desk?

Also, i'm wanting to avoid mouse mats altogether, as I would be forking out £15~ for a high quality mat.

Won't work on a glass desk. I've heard laser mice do better on glass but neither are really meant for it.

Correct, and i'm not being picky, but how would a wired optical mouse differ from a wireless optical mouse in regards to the signals being able to "bounce" back off a glass surface?

It wouldn't.
