My computer will not boot into cmos setup screen or windows. The lights come on my pc, the hard drive whirls a bit and then stops. The monitor remains blank, nothing comes on.

There is no bleeps. Dave

My hard drive made a few noises as it was rebooting when my pc crashed while playing a game. It tried to rebot but nothing happened, the monitor remained blank.

I would say either processor or graphics card.

Do you have access to a graphics card in order to rule that out?

Also have a look inside and make sure all your fans are clean of dust and working.

Even the smallest amount of dust on a fan can make the CPU overheat.

Dave.

There fans are working there is lot of dust. But the fans didn't seem to be over working.

I have had a lot of problems with my graphics card as some games always crashed after a few seconds especially newer ones.

Is it rare for the processor to fail?

I have no access to another graphics card.

So you think the hard drive is okay? It seem to stop booting at the point of the cmos creen coming up. But of course i can't see anything.

If you can see the cmos screen, even if it is brief then the CPU is fine and also your graphics.

You should have mentioned this earlier.

Almost certain its overheating, as I said earlier even a minute amount of dust will cause overheating and immediate shutdown.

Get a hoover and brush out and get it totally cleaned up.

Default My computer will not boot

Firstly, as you've a graphics card, does your motherboard have an onboard graphics chipset? if so, remove your graphics card and try to boot.

I'm not so concerned (at the mo) with a dodgy cpu, because (1) i've only ever heard of one failing through user negligence** and (2) If a cpu overheats, it will shutdown, but can be restarted once cooler.

**funny story behind that one.

Anyway, you'll need to troubleshoot this problem, remove the gpu as stated above, take the side panel off and switch on, visually confirm all fans are spinning and reply with the results.
