Hi Guys!

This is my first post here. I searched for a computer forum where i could ask people who know what they are talking about!

I have cable that transforms the signal of different 'ends' to another. Hard to understand?
EG) Firewire to USB.

Well, when I plug this lead into my budget computer, it works fine. When I plug it into my 'good' computer, I get the message "USB Device Not Recognised" in one of those notifications.

My poor computer is running; Windows XP Pro and has USB 1.0 ports.
My 'good' computer is running; Windows XP Home and has USB 2.0 ports.

Do you guys know what is making it work with one computer and not another?

Thanks
Eden

It sounds like maybe you need to install drivers

Definatly sounds drivers.

As you'd expect USB 2.0 is fully compatible with 1.0 gear, so that shouldn't make a difference.

Thats what I thought too.
Its a generic cable. It didn't come with any drivers. I contacted the dealer and they said that it does not need drivers as it is fully plug n play. They contacted the manufacturer of the cable and they said that the cable does not need drivers too.

Is there a giant drivers pack for generic things like this, anywhere on the net?

Oh I understand where you're coming from now.

But what is plugged into the other end? The drivers for that is what you need.

If you mean you're connecting two PC's together, you want to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files, it's the only way you can really do it through a USB cable (other than other very similar software)

Thanks for the reply.
I'm using a Presonus Firepod Recording interface on the other end. The drivers are installed for that. I also tried changed the end of the cable to a USB socket, and I tried flash drives and they all get the same 'not recognised' message.

USB leads don't have drivers, there's nothing to them, they literally just extend the socket on two devices to be touching, thus making a connection in the (very big) circuit.

If other devices get the same error in that socket then try a different USB socket, it may be slightly damaged.

Sorry, my bad, i should of explained. Its not just a lead. It has a thing inbetween the two lead ends which converts the signal. Just throwing a firewire end onto a usb lead wouldn't work without this converter.

I've tried on all 6 USB sockets. All giving the same message.

Truley strange, isn't it?

Oh I see, is it one of those PC transfer cables? Such as from belkin, or PC world's own ridiculously expensive one?

Except one end is FireWire?

I've had that message before, and I found out it was that I disabled the device (belkin USB wireless G).
