banjo7 is on a distinguished road
Default Need help on a build.

Hi,
Im cureently going to build a new PC.

I Have a budget of about £800-£1000

This is what i was thinking.

CPU
Intel Quad Core Q6660 or a Intel Core 2 Duo E6850

GPU
Nvidia 8600GT Or Nvidia 8800 GT

DVD/RW
Samsung DVD Drive

Case
Jeantech case

Case Cooling
2xFans

CPU Cooling
Zalman

Harddrives
Seagate 160gb

Ram
2X1gb

Motherboard
Nvidia 680 Sli

Power Supplies
800w

Sound Cards
Creative X-FI

I just wanted advice on if theres better for the money or which options are better.

If you could post what specs you think would be best for building a Gaming PC for a Grand.

Cheers

Go for the quad, simply for future proofing for multi-threaded games as they become more mainstream.

Bin the 680 chipset as it's SLI and you're only going single gpu.

Stick with the 8800GT as bang for buck it's the best gpu on the market today. (But only if your monitors resolution is 1680x1050 (20-22") or higher or the potential of the card will be wasted. If gaming at 1280x1024/1440x900 get a 8600GTS.

Bin the Zalman hsf for the cpu as it's lousy, especially for a quad. Go for the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro, as it's about half the price and will cool the cpu to around 10c lower than the zalman.

Make sure the ram is of the 800mhz variety as quads like lots of bandwidth.

The wattage on the psu is overkill. I'd recommend 600w if going for the 8800GT, 500w if going for the GTS. Enermax Liberty 500w or 620w would be my recommendation.
