Hey, I'm building a computer, but I've never done it before. Been on newegg for a while now, and I'm kind of hung up with the case and motherboard. I'm confused about the 8 pin connector, I don't even know if that comes with the case or not, I know it has the 24 pin one. Also, it has an "additional power connector." Don't know what that's about.

The 8pin connector being referred to is the 12v connector on the motherboard that powers the cpu. The 24 pin connector powers everything else. The psu must have this 8pin connector to power this board. For a board witht this chipset to have a 8pin connector suggests that it requires a lot of juice so I'm wondering what the rest of your components are and whether or not a 500w psu (and it's rated amps) will suffice. The additional power connector on the board is a molex connection which is used should you overclock. All psu's have a number of these plugs I'm concerned, completely really, in that the psu you are getting comes with the case. These are mostly generic psu's which are, to be blunt, crap (low efficiency, not very stable-causing random crashes, loud). And you simply can't compromise on the psu, especially when this board requires so much juice. It is the single most important component in a pc build.

Well, if I were to buy a separate power supply, are there any you'd recommend for this particular board? Or are there any motherboards that could work with the power supply that already comes with the case? I don't really have that much money to spend on a separate power supply, though.

Bottom line is you could more than likely run it with the psu provided with the case, but don't forget about the psu. I know it's not one of the sexy parts to a build, but it is, again, the most important part.
If it was me; this

Ok, so I've gotten all the parts together, everything is in the machine, there originally were no problems before the hard drive or DVD drive went in I believe, and a bunch of fans, I just need to install windows XP and I'll be good, but when I try to turn on my computer, after a bit of time it just shuts off.
(I'm just using this topic so I don't have to make a new one, and this one already has all my parts) |
