I've finally decided to have a desktop pc custom made for me, all I need to figure out is the exact spec. This is where I need the help. I want to use it mainly for video & photo editing with a little bit of gaming thrown in. I would like it to be as fast as possible (naturally) & as future proof as possible (differcult as that may be). I'd like two hard drives, one for windows the other for video storage. I've had a look on "pc specialist" as I need everything from keyboard to monitor, my budget is approx £1200 maybe a little more. I'm inclined towards Intel core 2 duo or quad what do you think.?
Please help

Hi Ken, I'm having a nosey now. Give me 15 minutes.

I'm spec'ing from the site you quoted. (Good choice by the way).

Future proof means Vista/DX10.

Video editing means a minimum of 2gb. (As does Vista).

I'd recommend a quad-core for future proofing but you'll not see use out of the other 2 cores, in a mainstream way, for a couple of years yet I'd hazard. Add to that you can get a dual-core core2 at 3ghz, this will be cheaper than a quad-core at 2.4ghz.

I'd recommend just buying the base unit from them though, and getting your monitor elsewhere as their screens aren't all that.

Total: 948.00. This one's more aimed at editing with more storage and a much less well-endowed graphics card. Quad-core. As you're vid-editing though I'd wouldn't recommend a lower resolution than 1680x1050 (depending on how serious you are about it). This card will struggle to game at this resolution.

The lightscribe optical drive on both builds is a good bet, not least because you can label your recordings. Ensure you purchase lightscribe-capable discs though should you go this route.

For a monitor, I'd be looking at one of Dell's own considering your quoted usage. Superb tft's.
