I am about to buy a desktop after years of using a laptop.
What should I look for in terms of specs. I do lots of internet surfing and will need good speeds for video use but not using it for design work at all, can get what I want from Word/Office. My friends tell me that Processor performance is all important but I would find it more useful to have the advice of forum experts. I will be running Windowns XP Pro. Any advice/suggestions much appreciated. |

I always recommend to buy the best computer you can afford. If you buy the cheapest, it will not perform well and you will have problems.
Running Word, IE and email does not require much hardware. Anything should work well. |

Say he can afford a $5000 PC, why would he buy that to run the internet and word? Waste of money. Get what you need. You only need to buy all you can for games.

"Best" isn't a objective qualifier though. The "best" system in the case of desktop tasks is probably a cheap X2 240 with a SSD, not a high-end processor system with 8GB of RAM and a 4890, whereas the latter is probably a better pick for a gaming system.
