Interesting decision. If this expands to anything but X58 (meaning P55 etc), and if nVidia's chipsets continue being terrible, this could be quite the coup. As of now, you can do Crossfire with an Intel motherboard, but not SLI, because SLI requires a bridging chip that nobody else can license.

This might doom nVidia's chipset business, but remember that the high end enthusiast market is better off using a GTX 280 or other SLI solution than Crossfire because of microstutter problems on ATI's stuff. With nVidia becoming more competitive by the day, do you think this will help or hurt their overall sales?

I thought this was happening, as I've been following the release of the Core i7's and X58's and all the boards keep saying something like: "Will support ATI Crossfire and possible Nvidia SLI"

It might hurt the sales of the nvidia chipsets, but they will probably get that money back again (and possibly more) for allowing it to be used on X58 boards and others.

Yea, it'll be good to be able to go by which motherboard is best, not by which graphics card you get.

they have been launched:

"After enough of a delay Nvidia has now finally launched its first Hybrid SLI-enabling chipset for Intel platforms, the nForce 730i. Coming in two flavors, with either GeForce 9300 or 9400 integrated graphics, the chipset provide support for Intel LGA775 CPUs with a FSB of up to 1333 MHz and dual-channel DDR2-1066 / DDR3-1333 memory, six SATA 3.0 Gbps ports (RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5-ready), one PCI-Express 2.0 x16 port, up to 12 USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, 7.1 channel audio and DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity.

Both featuring DirectX 10 and GeForce Boost support, the GeForce 9300 and 9400 have 16 Stream Processors clocked at 1200 MHz and 1400 MHz respectively and GPU frequencies of 450 MHz and 580 MHz respectively."

That's "intel platforms" as in Intel CPUs :) Easy mistake.

If it says nForce, it's a nVidia chipset. The first one with SLI on Intel motherboards/chipsets is going to be X58.

Ah, my mistake, I thought it was meaning Intel boards. I thought it was strange that this came up, when I also thought X58's were meant to be the first.
