Well I just went and got a Dell from a college near me, they update the systems every 3 years and they sell the others off dirt cheap.

Haven't got the specs down yet but it does come with the monitor, computer probably a bunch of cables too.

Just wondering what the average Optiplex system had in 2006? (Just assuming it's an optiplex, from a college so I'm guessing)

Just in case you're wondering why, I got the system on order to come at the end of the term, for the damned reasonable price of £10. Yeah, £10. Full system, £10. Happy chappy, can break it for spares and get more than that on eBay lol.

hmmm, optiplex... the commercial ones with the desktop form factor right? if the college you bought the thing off is as cheapo as the school i go to, probably have a P4 or celeron 2.0-2.6 ghz CPU, 512mb RAM, 40GB hard drive, crap inbuilt graphics and I'm guessing the moniter will be a 15-17'' CRT.

You should get either a 3.8 Pent IV or an early duo-core. My wife works for a University and they do almost the same thing. They used to charge $25 (US) for them, but the last few years just let the employees take them home for free. They also use Dell Optiplex's (Optipli? lol), and the one my daughter has is a 3.8 Pentium, but it's a 04 or '05 model.

You should be able to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB's and by adding a new PSU get a decent GPU for it. Two things to note, around that time, the CD/DVD player they were putting in those things had a major firmware flaw, and you will probably need to find the firmware update, I had it, but deleted it a few weeks ago when I got her a new DVD. The other is: they probably added some programs that "control" the windows. Emory did. I had to wipe the hard drive to get rid of it and re-install the OS, which is why you will need the firmware update.

CRT?

Doubt it.

15" - 17" sounds right but I thought these were usually TFT's mounted on a bracket that also holds the main box.

Or is that just the newer ones... (they're still just a crap! )

Haha, they're all crap. I do hope it's a TFT, be perfect for a second monitor!

You know for a tenner I'd have bought a whole lot more of them..

You could sell parts for so much more than that
