This is a long story, so please bear with me.
Here is the config on my wife's 4 year old desktop: Compaq Presario SR1010Z Windows XP Home SP3 Asus K8S-LA (Salmon, v 1.03) mobo AWARD BIOS v6.00PG Rev. 3.01 Cool Max 500W PSU (New-Install 2 weeks ago) 512 MB Ram AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 20GB sata HDD NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 About a year ago, we had a bad thunderstorm. Afterward, her system would not boot.(No power when she pressed the switch.) After checking the cords and surge suppressor, I opened the case. I didn't smell anything burned, but thought that maybe lightning had damaged something. I pulled the mobo and PSU, but couldn't see any problem. I put the system back together and it fired up fine. A week or so later when she tried to fire it up, again, no power. I unplugged the PSU from the mobo and plugged it in again. It worked. She hasn't had any more problems until about a month ago when, again, no power. This time when I disconnected the PSU, it didn't work. I pulled her PSU and tried it on my computer. It didn't work, so I bought a new PSU and installed it. Worked fine for a few days, and again, no power. The trick of unplugging the PSU and plugging it back in is working for now, but I know there is obviously something else wrong, I just don't know what. I have told her to just leave the system running until I can figure out what is wrong. Once the system boots, there are no errors, beeps, or problems with software. The entire system seems to work just fine. What can keep the system from booting? Any suggestions? ![]() I know just enough to be DANGEROUS! |

Sounds like a text book faulty power supply.

That's what I thought, but I just put in a new PSU about 2 weeks ago.

You also bought a CoolMax, which is statistically identical to "a dead PSU".
The other scenario is some sort of faulty standby thing on a fried ATX connector.

Your suggestion about the ATX connector gave me an idea. I just checked the system clock. It was way off, so I pulled the CMOS battery. My battery tester says it is dead. I will get another one tomorrow and see if that could be the problem. I've never heard of that happening, but I guess it could. If the system went into hibernation, the PSU would be turned off and couldn't start again until it was reset by the CMOS. With the battery dead, it couldn't reset itself. Unplugging the connector resets the PSU. Does that sound reasonable? Thank you very much for the idea. I knew this forum would be useful. You guys are great! Thanks.

Aha, that does indeed sound like it could be the case. I'll remember that for the future, and it'll be of course a cheap fix if it is the CMOS.
