Default PC Failure I think its the power supply but i need advice...

Hi my mum bought a pc in 2002 and i worked great right up until the beging of this month, first we had a system crash so i had to restore the entire hard drive, since then we had a power surge and the computer turns on fine some times and others it dosn't work at all, also it can just turn its self off when in the middle or a program or game. When it does this failure it wont work a again until i turn the mains on and allow power to the system then i remove the cpu while still on and the place it back in to the cpu slot. The reason i think its the power sumply is because it wont power my own system but once i have dont the cpu take out and replace and i try it in my system it will power it, why?

My mums system:
power supply is 500W
unknow mother board (think its an imperial something)
2.6GHZ Intel Celeron CPU
386MB ram
40GB hdd

My system is same apart from:
but different motherboard, Ram and larger harddirve.
please help its driving me crazy.

Is this sentence correct, it not powering on until the mains is on is normal as with all electrical equipment and are you sure you know what a CPU is, removing it while the PC is on and replacing it would probably cause major damage to you and the system, irreversible damage.

Well I can't help you much on your problem but yeah, your might be talking about your PSU and not CPU..

Cpu is "Central Prossing Unit" aka your processor.. removing your cpu while the system is still on, or Psu is still on, would make heavy damage to your system, so I hope that this is not what you have done
