As I often do, I left my PC on and went to do other things. On returning to the office I smelt electrical burning and the computer had switched off. I opened the case and noiced the power supply was hot.

I then ordered a new power supply straight away and replaced this. There was nothing. a green LED on the mother board illuminated but the PC would not switch on.

I then disconnected everything but the mother board. This time the PC fired up.

I then connected one of the hard disks. It smoked in front of my eyes, so I thought I had the failure tracked down. I connected the other HDD but the PC would not fire up. When I disconnected the HDD the PC would fire up.

So, now I have 2 faulty HDD's which is a real bummer as I used one as a backup so I've got some data recovery to do now.

Problem I've got, is that I noticed that although I can get the mother board to power up it's not going through POST. (No speaker BEEP or anything on the montitor). Now I know that without any HDD it'll not do much but I think I'm right in thinking that I should still get POST?

I'm thinking I need to get a new motherboard and new HDD's - but I'm hesitant as I don't know what has caused this. Anybody any ideas/advice?

It should post with no hard disk, fyi it should post with just ram, gfx, psu and cpu.

Sounds like the psu went, which also damaged the mobo, when you fired it up with a new psu the bad mobo fried the hd's.

All you can do is replace stuff until it works.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like they don't make the Asus a8n-sli anymore and refurbs are costing more than I paid for this one brand new!
