I wanted a cheap system to host a webcam server from work. So I got the parts last night and attempted to assemble them together. I had to wait a little because they were in my car and were cold so I could see condensation forming on the CPU so I just left it in the box near a warm radiator as to not cause any damage.

When I turn the thing on, the fans spin but the monitor doesn’t turn on. I turn it on manually and it just says that there is no signal (as it would say if the cable was unplugged)

The motherboard has on-board Graphics.

Placed the motherboard into the case along with the CPU, plugged in some ram I had leftover (I was meaning to try the ram in my working pc to see if this would get it working) and tried an old HDD (am also going to try to connect my working raptor when I get home to see if that will get it working)

I connected all the cables (correctly I hope) and turned it on but there is no sound from the system speaker, I can hear the HDD spin and the CPU fan works so I'm assuming there are no faulty power connections. But the monitor displays nothing.

What could be the problem? When I get home I will try the hardware from my working system with the different parts to see if any are faulty but before that do you guys have any advice as to what may be wrong?

What’s the bare minimum for a system to run so that I can unplug everything that’s unnecessary and test the remaining parts?

In your case just PSU, Mobo, CPU and RAM.

Try that, double check all the cables if it still does what it is doing get the mobo swapped.

So I dont need a HDD for it to boot?

I try it with my working mobo and see what happens.

Yeah, you do to boot.

But you don't to get anything on the screen pre-boot.

So even without a HDD I should still see something on the monitor when I turn the PC on?

I'l try it with my working HDD nevertheless.

NO HDD is needed to turn on a PC just what I outlined above.

I had the same problem when i built my computer. I had to take one of the RAM sticks out hit the reset button then change the voltage of the RAM in the bios then put the other stick back in.

It could be the ram since the ones I'm using were taken out of my system to stop it crashing. I'l give my old sticks a shot.

I wuldn't I wuld just go with what CG said, if he had the same problem then I would do exactly what he said.

Heh, well I unplugged everything and plugged it back in. This time I connected the sys speaker, all the usb front panel cables ect and it worked. I probably just missed a connection or something. Luckily, it wasnt faulty hardware. I'm posting this from the system now.

anyone ever considered building and selling there own desktops? i took a trip down to PC world today
because im going to start case modding and checked out a few desktops that were for the customers to have a nosey with, obviously cmd task manager and stuff was locked but i checked the specs on a particular desktop that caught my eye, the price was just over 650 pound , and the specs were terrible , i also visited a few sites to check what mobo ram cpu etc it had and wrote them down, I've just finished searching for all the components i wrote down and the total came to just shy of 155 pound , then searched for a compatible case monitor mouse and keyboard and the sub total was 275 pound, just goes to show how big a profit margin they you can make

Yes, all they have to say is 'Dual Core' or 'Quad Core' and that will raise the price a few £££

The CPU I bought is a Dual Core 2Ghz AMD processor. How much was it? A measely £24 or so.
