Default PC shut downs and freezes

Hello there

I've been experiencing problems with my PC which include; freezes, shutdowns, MSI loaded at startup messages, screen redraw problems and messages that pop up and disapear to quickly to read.

Q1: I think I have a decent PC and only bought it last year but now when I play games (BF2142 & Pro Evolution Soccer) it sometimes shutsdown or the program just disappears. I thought it might be a overheating problem and noticed the processor fan was full of dust so I've cleaned that. I've also re-installed XP to see if that was the problem. But alas it's still comes back.

Could it be a graphics card problem? Overheating? etc.

Q2: I also purchased Nortons 2005 and have been experiencing various problems with it. I've had to re-install it on a number of occassions but have keep up my subscription over the years. The error message I get at start up (MSI must be loaded at startup) apparently has something to do with Nortons. Should I upgrade because my version is too old?

Q3: Can you recommend any good apps that fully check your PC for hardware/software problems and give you solutions?

INTEL P4 3.2GHZ DUAL CORE CPU
PCI-X P4 775 TWINS Motherboard
2x 1GB (1024MB) PC4200 DDR2 RAM
250GB SATA HDD, 16X +/- DVDRW DL Optical Drive
PCI EXPRESS GEFORCE 6600 512MB Graphics
3.5" FLOPPY DISC DRIVE
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL (OEM)

I recommend you get rid of Norton as it is that that is possibly causing all your problems, you should also check your Graphics Card and make sure the fan on that is dust free and spinning properly, another thing you should do is run memtest as it could be a memory issue
To remove Norton completely you should you this
You should then install Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition

In relation to Norton I think many others will agree with what Social suggests.

Indeed. Norton has a bat habit of over-doing itself. It pretty much protects so much that it harms =\

If you have a recent version of Norton installed that includes a fraud-detection bar on your browser, and you're running Windows XP, then here's what you can try:

1. Open the 'Start' menu.

2. Click 'Run'

3. Type in 'msconfig' and hit ENTER.

4. With the 'General' tab selected, select 'Selective Startup'

5. Make sure that 'Load startup items is completely unchecked.

6. Click 'OK'

7. Restart your computer.

This will make sure that NOTHING loads when you start your computer. Norton will not load at all, but you will still have protection on your browser. If this fixes your problem, then re-post and I'll tell you how to enable the programs that you want to start-up when you turn your computer on. If not, still re-post and we'll work on your problem further.
