yes its the primary hdd and yes it has windows xp sp3 on it

Try doing a fresh install of XP on another HDD if possible, this should determine whether it is the HDD.

Have you overclocked or changed any BIOS options?

Have you installed any software recently?

yews i changed the bios settings to run at optimal settings and also i overclocked my cpu and graphics

Try restoring them to their defaults and report back.

i loaded the fail-safe setttings and set my cpu and graphics to there defult speeds i ran cod 4 for about 5 minutes and things seem to be ok so far...

i have been using my pc all day now since putting settings back to normal and everything been running fine. Thankyou every one for all your help.

Try creating a new profile for yourself and see what happens. Your profile may be corrupt.

Got it solved mate, was a heat issue or bad overclock.
