Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to build my own system, however when I boot it up I’m not getting any video output – everything seems to be functioning, but there’s nothing on the monitor. The system consists of the following components:

- ASUS P5VD2-X Motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 CPU (2.13GHz)
- Inno3d GeForce 8600 GTS DDR3 Graphics Card (256Mb)
- 512Mb DDR2 RAM (PC4200)
- 350W PSU

I don’t have a system hard drive connected to it at the moment, so I can’t tell how far it’s getting in the boot process. When I turn the system on the motherboard lights come on and the CPU and graphics card fans start spinning, but there’s no video signal. I only have the basics connected at the moment (Motherboard, CPU, Graphics Card, RAM) so it can’t be any external devices causing the problem. The graphics card is connected to a VGA monitor via the DVI-to-VGA adapter that came with the card.

The fact that the fans start spinning makes me think the problem isn’t anything to do with the CPU or graphics card, but I really don’t know. The graphics card has a 6-pin power connector at the rear which isn’t connected to anything at the moment, I’m not sure if that’s necessary or not.

Does anybody have any ideas about what the problem could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Are there more than 1 output on your graphics card? If there is, try the monitor in the other one.

You have a six pin power connector on the back of the graphics card and you didn't plug it in?!? If it wasn't necessary it wouldn't be there!

I didn't see that part about the power connector. Yes, that is needed, if your PSU doesn't have one, get a Corsair 450W unit.

Or get a molex to 6 pin adapter for a fraction of the price. Unless the PSU is offbrand or something, in which case it's not a bad investment.

I assume this build was thrown together out of old parts? It's a little haphazard.

Thanks for your replies.

I connected the 6-pin connector using a 2x molex to 6-pin adapter, however i'm still not getting any video. I forgot to mention in my original post that i had in fact previously tried this, to no avail.

I've also tried connecting through the 2nd DVI output, but still no luck.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again for your help.

have you got a different PSU, GFX card, monitor cable or monitor that you can try to see where the problem is?

Yeah I've tried the set-up with a different PSU, monitor and monitor cable, but I have no other PCI-e GFX cards to test it with.

When you tested it with the other PSU did you plug int he 6pin power?

Would also bring it out of the case and stick it on a box to rule out shorting on that as well.
