Default A Quick Guide to Technical Acronyms - (for the non-"tech-savy")

Some of the acronyms that you may find on this site, or others, or on your computer - but not understand, so here is a quick guide to some of the most common ones, so that if you read them, or have read them you can understand what is being talked about

BIOS - "Basic Input/Output System" The program which starts up all your hardware, ie. HardDrive, processor and everything else your computer needs to work.
BLOG - "weB LOG" A diary written to be posted on a web page.
CAD - "Computer Aided Design" A design made on a computer, ie. for a bottle, monitor frame etc.
CAM - "Computer Aided Manufacture" Used after "CAD" to build/make the product/design, by using a machine linked up to the computer, usually via "USB"
CPU - "Central Processing Unit" The part of your computer that processes any information you put in (like a single tap on your keyboard) and carries out whatever necessary operations to do it. Faster CPU's will be able to run more operations per second meaning anything like opening Internet Explorer will happen a lot quicker (Its not just 1 Operation - Open this program, there are many operations involved in any one thing)
DOS - "Disk Operating System" Microsoft's old way of running a computer before the first edition of Windows was released. Still used for some programs, or to access certain information.
DPI - "Dots Per Inch" A method of sizing the a screen resolution, or resolution of a picture of video.
GPU - "Graphics Processing Unit" A part on the 'Graphics Card' that processes all the video data, particularly for gaming, they use a more complex parallel structure making them more effective than a CPU that is used for general purpose computing.
HTML - "HyperText MarkUp Language" A code used on webpages to tell the computer what to display and how to display it.
IP - "Internet Protocol" A Unique address belonging to your computer allowing it to access the internet. ie. "123.456.7.89"
MS-DOS - " Microsoft Disk Operating System" See DOS
RAM - "Random Access Memory" Memory storage that your computer can access at random (As in any piece of data, wherever it is stored in the RAM, whether or not it bears any relation to the last piece of accessed data) whenever necessary.
ROM - "Read-Only Memory" The memory that your computer requires so that it 'remembers' how to turn on and boot up, the "BIOS" is stored here too.
USB - "Universal Serial Bus" Method of conncting peripherals (external devices eg. printer, scanner) to your computer, it took over its predecessors (mostly PS/2) largely because it carries a small current, allowing for devices not to have to be plugged in to a socket as well.

If there are any other acronyms you do not understand click here.
