hey guys. i wasn't sure where to put this so i guess general would be the best place.
i'm building a FTP data server and i'd like to know what i should get as far as hardware, what's the best OS to use, what's the best FTP software to get, best firewall and encryption software, things like that. i've built PC's before plenty of times but i've never built a server so i'm a bit new to this field. i also want to have it so that each user (it'll be me and my friends) have our own allocated space and we can't access eachothers without permission. so if you guys could point me to a tutorial on how to do that or if there's some software to do that as well that'd be great. i'd like it to be small (i have limited space right now) i'm gonna have at least two 1TB HDD's (one for the actual data and the second for backup) and i'd like to have a NIC that supports FiOS direct into the server so it doesn't have to switch to Coax. so please, ask questions if you need something clarified, you can send me an e-mail to my gmail account anytime. and thanx ahead of time for your guys's help -Kaze- |

I don't think that building a server is all that different to building a normal computer except that is has to be reliable and ideally redundant.
I suggest you go and have a look at some of the name server brands like HP or Dell and see what components they use. This will give you a good idea. The actual build process is the same unless you go with redundant power supplies and that. Maybe have a look on eBay, there are some very good deals that come up on servers from time to time. As for the access management, you will want an OS that runs a webserver (either Linux or Windows) that runs some sort of script to manage it. If you don't want to write it yourself there are lots that you can download or buy from the internet. Hope this gives you some pointers.
