My spare computer takes ages to boot up & loads windows, If I try to use windows while it is loading it just crashes.

I don't have the time to wait around for it to load properly, so what do I look into to speed this up?

It may be the case that there are a lot of programs are attempting to start up every time you load windows.

You can disable the unwanted ones or all of them by going to:
Start > Run > Type in msconfig

Then click the Startup tab at the top. There you can view all the programs that startup with windows. The more you have the longer it takes. I have almost all of them disabled.

This this fails to work post back!

You can also use a program called spybot, not only does it take care of all your spyware as well as acting as an activevirus scanner (altho not used as the only virus scanner) it will also monitor your start up programs. its a free program to download. If you are in advanced user made you can click on tools on the left menu and then down to system start-up. Most anything that is not highlighted would be a good idea to keep checked and everything else you can view by clicking on it and reading the discription to the right. If it says typically not required, then uncheck it. your programs will still work even if they are unchecked but it wont run on start up.
