Default System proposition.

Hello all, I'm considering building a system for a friend, he wants high spec & affordability, I've got all this stuff in at roughly £350+ (OEM prices)

My question is to you... will it all fit together? AFAIK it will, but I'm seeking further clarification. Here is the system proposed.

Advice appreciated as always.

Akasa ZEN V2 Tower Case Black w/o PSU (NEW Version)

400W AKASA PAXPower ATX 2.2 Ultra Quiet PSU with hi-efficiency of a minimum of 80% even at full.

Gigabyte GA73PVM-S2H NF630i, GeForce 7100, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, RAID, uATX.

Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz S775

Kingston KTT533D2/2G 2GB DDR2 SODIMM

Sapphire Technology Radeon X1550 512MB DDR2 PCIE DVI-I TVO DVI

Default System proposition.

You're running a mediocre-to-terrible low-end ATI with a quad core, and a 400W PSU on top of that? With laptop memory? What exactly are you trying to build here?

It will fit (except the RAM), but don't expect anything great out of it. I'm not sure if 400W is even enough for that card. If you want a budget system dump the quad-core, if you want a gaming system dump the quad core, the video card, and the PSU.

[I apologize that was in fact (obviously) the wrong RAM specified! It's another couple of Kingston modules which I know will be fine. (Both DDR2 @ 800Mhz)]

A terrible ATI? I am at a loss as to why you would say this? I'm no expert in hardware but I know that this card is very reasonable. Perhaps I wasn't specific enough when I mentioned what the main purpose of this system would be, I don't want a system for the very brim edge of modern gaming. I won't be requiring a card any more powerful than this one, 512 mem. @ 800Mhz speed freq. with the V/O clock being 550 Mhz. I think this very reasonable indeed for the money, I've read many a review for it too seems to pick up a lot of positive comments. (Don't get me wrong it is, as you say, low end, relatively, but it will provide more than adequate perf.)

As for the board it's another low cost comp. but it's very capable. The RAM capac. is more than adequate again, the FSB comes in @ 1033Mhz, supports the very latest CPUs. I don't see how this is crumby? Gigabyte make quality components & ditto the graphics card I've had good reports of this board.

And 400W will be, again, more than adequate to power the card & the rest of the gear.

Thanks though for clarification of the systems compatibility.

Default System proposition.

If you can save money (and you should be able to) do away with the 512mb version of the card and get a 256mb. Unless you got it cheap.

This amount of memory is only required at higher resolutions (1680x1050, 1920x1200) which this card can't hope to game at, so in effect, the extra cost of the extra memory is wasted as it will sit idle.

That's obviously a fair point although I did realize this to begin with. The card was purchased cheaply, a 256, even the cheapest would barely save me a tenner.

Once again though, cheers for the input lads.

I've got all the components in except the CPU, still waiting on delivery. I'll update when I've got it running.
