Iam using Windows XP - Pro - SP 2. My system restarts randomly without any warning. How can I troubleshoot? Is there any free diagnostics tools available in the internet? Iam unable to conclude whether it is a hardware or software issue. Can anyone guide me? Thanks.

Probably your CPU fan clogged with dust so the system is overheating. Cleaning the CPU fan and heatsink is the first thing to try.

Are you getting any error messages? Any blue screens?

yaeh sounds like it might be Overheating a bit. i had the same problem when i changed my CPU i forgot to plug the fan back in so my PC was restarting. Do what dave said: Blow the fan out and clean the heatsink.
But just to be sure its overheating, i would suggest that you feel the region over your CPU

Depends on the machine, some shut off some restart.
Either way shut offs or restarts are almost always overheating. |

Also, try downloading a program like Core temp, you can minimise it to the system tray where it will display the CPU core temps, then you can keep an eye on them to see what temps it gets to when it restarts.

Looks like I have been over-ruled. See if there is any dust around the CPU, if there is blow it and get back to us. BUT - Don't go pocking your CPU unless you have grounded yourself or you run the risk of shocking it.

Thanks guys for all ur replies. Well I opened my case and could not see any dust. I observed the CPU fan for quite sometime and I feel it functions properly. can I remove the CPU and place it back? will it help?I don't get any error messages and it happens randomly.

if i were you i would try and swapping out the power supply
power supplies that are going tend to make pc's restart randomly, also there can be software bugs (like a RAM fault) first thing i test is the power supply when this happens |
