Is having up to date firmware critical to router performance. Apologies if this appears a stupid question but I am very much in learning stage as far as PC's and IT concerned.

There are very few reasons to do it, like if you need a feature that is opened using new firmware. Doing it for more 'performance' is futile.

Thanks for that info. Mine is out of date and cannot seem to be able to update it anyway so no problem.
