I was transferring 2 GB of files to my USB earlier and I noticed that it took over 30 minutes. When I went to download the contents of the USB to my other computer, it took only a minute or two. I am suspecting that my USB ports are not USB2.0. I tried going to System->DeviceManager and manually selecting my USB ports and updating the drivers, but it said that there are no updates are avaliable. Is there a way to fix my problem?

If you check in Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus Controllers, you can confirm whether you have USB2 or not ..... it may show as USB Enhanced Host Controller.

Unless the PC is old, it's unlikely not to have USB2. What you might be experiencing here is a slow USB stick .... often writing data to a stick is much slower than reading data. My System: Home Build

When I check the Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus Controllers, I see:
2 X Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller 6 X Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller 8 X USB Root Hub Does that mean I only have two USB 2.0 ports? I bought my computer about half a year ago. I also tried copying the same files to by brothers 1 year old Kingston DTi/2GB, and it took roughly the same amount of time. I agree that copying a file takes significantly longer then reading, but does copying a 2GB file take over 30 minutes? |

I dont think there is anything wrong with your USB Ports or Drivers, it's probably just a slow USB stick formatted in FAT32.
There's an interesting article here, which you might like to consider. Also not all USB sticks are the same .... some are painfully slow at writing ... see here for some comparisons on different models. It's a long read, but the differnes are quite staggering. |
