Not sure if its software or hardware related but ive got a toshiba satellite A100-062 laptop with windows vista installed, at the weekend i brought a laptop usb cooler to stand it on, now when i close the lid or put it to sleep the fans on the cooler still light up and spin. The only way i can stop them is to shut down the laptop or unplug the cooler, any ideas why this is doin it, ive tried the cooler on my brothers Toshiba laptop which has XP on it and looks pritty much the same as mine and the cooler fans turns off when you close the lid, or put it to sleep.
Cheers
Nic...

Thats because the aptop still has power, and is supplying that power to its USB Devices still.

Its no different from say a laser mouse, I don't know if you have one but if you do you'll notice that its red light is still on, with the lid down or on sleep.

Its probably very possible to stop, with a task scheduler, but you wouldn't want to, as it would defeat the point.

If the computers on whether the lids closed or not if it's on, then the CPU etc. is all active, therefore you still need the cooling to be running.

Most likely thing is is that the XP is set to disable USB devices when on sleep, or lid closed, whether that is something thats been manually changed, or the XP standard, I don't know.

Don't forget Vista is much more power hungry than XP!

I don't see how that changes whether it powers USB on sleep or not..?

I was going more on that if Vista recognised it as a cooler, then perhaps it was keeping it going after sleep to keep it cool as stuff would be hotter than it woudl in XP. Or maybe I am just talking out of my bottom.

because, if Vista is more power hungry, the CPU will be getting used more than XP, and therefore the cooler would need to be turned on more often.

I don't think how it recognises it would make any difference as far as power supply is concerned..

But you may be right, either way what we're saying is that its not a fault.

You still need cooling even on sleep.

You do indeed need cooling even in sleep - does the USB override the laptop cooling?
