I have an issue whereby when I plug my Blackberry device into the PC through a USB connection the PC just shuts down....no warning...no error.

The device has worked previously no problem and problem occurs on front and back ports. Only recent change to PC is upgrade to AVG 8 antivirus.

I did detect a small 'groan' from the PC prior to shut down...maybe the fans? Also, I generally need to unplug the power cable and reinsert for the PC to re-start.

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like something is shorting, that is why you have to remove the power to reset the PC.

Try the device and lead in another machine, it's a process of elimination.

If it works fine then the mobo in your PC could be on the way out.

I agree, sounds like a power overload. One of my daughters has a camera that does that.

Thanks Chaps.

I have a scanner attached through USB which draws power from that but does not cause a shut down.

The Blackberry device works OK on my work PC so no problem there.

Any advise on how to repair or live with it? What may have caused it?

Can you be specific about whether you have USB1 or USB2 on each machine?

Is there a power supply you can plug into the Blackberry before connecting it via USB? That would eliminate any overload problem caused by the BB being solely powered via USB.

You could also try connecting it via a separate powered USB hub.
