Hi All

I am in the process of looking for a new machine. Would anyone buy a Dell?

Would welcome any advice on the advantages/disadvantages.

Also I have seen one that i like with Mesh computers, however when i read some reviews on Mesh, they were not very good to say the least.

In my opinion i would steer clear of going to the brands direct.

Head over to ebuyer.com - the UK's largest independent online retailer of computers, components, electronics, MP3 Players,cameras, televisions, DVD Players, car audio, software and more...

You can get the same brands at cheaper prices and if you get a problem you phone ebuyer who are very good at customer service.

I know, i spend about £500 a day with them.

A Dell Computer is fine depending on what you plan to use it for. If you're going to be video editing for example you might want to look at an Apple Mac. If you're just going to need a computer for general office type work, spreadsheets, emails, browsing the internet, then a Dell is perfectly fine.

I would not reccomend you buy a Dell if you're wanting a super gaming computer, you would be much better building your own.

It's not going to be down to brand name whether or not a pc will fit your bill, it's going to be down to the system specification.

So can i assume you're referring to Dell's pricing policy, build quality, and customer support?

Dell's base-spec pricing is arguably rather good when compared with other merchants who sell pre-builds. It's when you start upgrading items and adding items over and above the base-spec that Dell sting you on cost.

Their tft monitors have always been of a rather high quality, with good colour rendition, decent refresh speed, and excellent contrast and brightness ratios. Also, and just as importantly, the user interface on them is usually intuitive.

I've been told (Crimson jump in here at any time) that their customer service regarding faulty equipment is also rather good, although having no personal experience of it i can't comment.

Bottom line: If you can find a base-spec machine on their site that suits you then give it a go, but compare the price v spec with other merchants first to ensure you're getting the best deal you possibly can. Include in the 'spec' part of that the warranty though.

If you do go the way of Dell and considering what you and i have spoken about previously i would suggest the Dimension C521 at £379.

I was still under Dells warrenty when I had my hard drive fail, so I didn't have to pay anything thankfully.

The customer care representative I spoke with online took my phone number and called me personally, she talked me through the diagnostics applications to try and resolve the issue and when that failed arranged to have a courier deliver a new laptop with all the software by the next morning.

Mesh computers are another alternative to Dell, very well built and I've never had a problem with them in the past. They offer a similar service to Dell, but it's just another option for you to consider
