In you old computer do you mean you were able to boot off the disk, or do you mean it opened up inside of windows when you clicked on the drive?

Ah, the plot thickens lol. Is it an UPGRADE copy of Vista Ultimate or a NEW INSTALL version? If it's an UPGRADE copy, you'll have to throw a copy of XP on your new build and THEN run your Vista disk. It really sounds to me like it's an upgrade copy, not a clean install copy. Something to remember though, unlike XP, a Vista copy can ONLY be run on one computer. Once it's on a computer and registered, that's it, you can't throw that copy on another computer. I had to replace my first MoBo in my build and then had to call Microsoft and go through a nut roll to get them to "allow" me to re install my legally bought copy of Ultimate on the new Mobo. If someone gave you that disc and is already using it, you are pissing in the wind. The retail "clean' install version of Ultimate comes with two discs, the 64 bit system and the 32 bit system. You can use one or the other on ONE computer. You can't run the 64 bit disc on one computer and the 32 bit disc on another computer. Am I making sense?

yes that makes sense...the copy i have is a freshly made copy..ill have to find out about the clean install vs upgrade version though.... but as i stated above do you or anyone know which files i need to look for on the cd i have to distinguish if it is the bootable clean install version?

ok it has pretty much been confirmed the copy i have is not bootable, so i am having a new one sent. 1. in the mean time once i get the OS installed what is the very next step? all of the drivers? 2. what all components will need drivers installed and what is the easiest way to get the latest versions? going to the vendors site? 3. also i am unsure about the partitioning of my HDD....if i were to install XP and say down the road want to also install vista and be able to dual boot what do i need to do as far as partitioning the first OS install around? 4. last but not least....if i were to install XP is there a way to get direct x10 support through this and if so how will i go about doing so??

| 1 and 2: That, plus Windoze Update, which may mean you already have some of the drivers. If your network cards need drivers, download those beforehand, else you will be stuck! The manufacturers are the best bet.

I suggest you get a legal copy of Windows that comes with a proper CD in the case and then install it. Then ask here for help again. We will not help you trying to find out if your CD is bootable or making it bootable as that is piracy.

understandable server.....is it worth it to go for vista for the direct x10 or can that be implemented on XP somehow?
