When i touch the side of the case the mains plug is still in, so i earth through that.

Voilas! A big piece of information that went unmentioned. If the chassis of the computer is still attached to a mains socket, it will still be earthed.

Remember to keep your hand on the chassis at all times though, or you'll be subject to static build up.

Touching a random unearthed metal item is pretty useless.
