Hi all,
seasons greetings to each & every one of you.
New year coming, new PC required.
I can spend forever surfing the Interweb & never decide on components for my new PC, technology moves faster than I do !!
However, I think I have made my choices but would feel far happier if some of you experts would cast your eyes over my proposed spec & let me have your valued thoughts.
I also need to know what I have left out (I'm a putz, you see), & where I can improve for little or no extra cost.

Proposed new build,
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775
L2 8MB Cache (2x4MB (4MB per core pair) Retail Boxed Processor £149.95
Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard £97.93
Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 HyperX Memory Non-ECC CL5 £49.04
LiteOn IHAS120 20X SATA DVD±RW/DL Black Bare Drive - OEM £14.99
Corsair 620W HX Modular PSU - ATX12V v2.2 APFC £97.63
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium - DVD - 64-bit - English £83.66
Sapphire HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI
Dual slot cooler HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card £119.89

Cart total inc vat & shipping (£5.51) £618.60

All prices are from Ebuyer and I intend to build it, (blow it up), myself,
yours in anticipation,

Slime.

Swap the Q6600 for a E8[4 or 5]00, rest looks fine to me. P5Q Pro isn't as good as the UD3P either, but if it's cheaper in the UK just get it.

Hi Carbon,
excuse my ignorance, but I thought a Core 2 Quad would be better than the Core 2 Duo by definition, but what do I know?
Please could you suggest which processor to go for & who makes the UD3P??
Many thanks mate,

Slime.

No, the C2D will be better for tasks unless you specifically use quad-threaded apps: very very few people do, and do so enough to make it worth the decrease in performance. The E8500 should be picked over the E8400 if it's only a little more expensive, otherwise the E8400 is fine.

Gigabyte makes it - full name is the GA-P45-UD3P. It may also be referred to as the GA-EP45-UD3P.

I assume this is for gaming judging by the pretty good graphics card and 4Gb of RAM. In games these days an E8400 or E8500 will be faster since few games can use quad core effectively. For games now I'd say dual core, that'll last easily long enough for a new processor type to come out or for the Core I7's to drop to a price most can afford.

Can I be cheeky and ask what website you're using there? I built a system not much better than that and its come to near £800..

Which is better ?? E8400 or E8500 & isn't Q6600 more future proof??

Q6600 is more future proof but by the time it'll become standard a Core I7 or its next version will be a viable option with much greater performance so its not such a great deal!

I might have a build on eBuyer, see if its cheaper.. Thanks!

TBH, Q6600 are 65nm technology, E8xxx are 45nm.

You'd be better with a Q9300 or similar if you want a quad.

How much are these highly numbered quads? I would pick a more expensive processor but my budget tends to stop me.

They're $300 and useless. Worse OCing in general than the Q6600.

You can't "future-proof" anything.
