Did a few searches and seems that none of this has been mentioned as of yet, so I'll just do a quick post do give you all some nice info on the latest Appleing.

First off, there's a new iTunes - iTunes 9 wih a bit of a revamp in the GUI. It actually looks much nicer, which is surprising, because they havn' changed much.

And my first impression is that it handles widescreen displays much better than the previous version. iTunes 8 on my 1440 x 900 display was poor, considering it's Apple, I don't think it was just my system or install, as I have read similar stories. 9 on the other hand looks great, not too sure if they've switched over in most common display (which most presume is 1024 x 768) but I highly doubt that.

I'll check it out on a 1280 x 1024 PC later on and get back to you.

Theres also new Quicktime, similar changes as iTunes, and Safari 4 was released also (Not today but I'll bundle that in here) which has a very interesting take on multiple pages.

I can't remember what they're calling it, but you couldn't say it was tabbing. So controversial looking that, would you believe it, I have actually downloaded Safari on a Windows PC.

Not really used it much yet, but at first galnce I think it behaves much better than the old Windows version, again, when I've fiddled some more I'll reply to my own post :P

And also there has been a firmware update for iPod touch and iPhone users (3.1.1) which I have yet to use, will reply about that also, however I'm sceptical that they will have changed much.

The other, arguably the biggest release is not software, but I'll put it here anyway, to save another - related - thread, is the new iPod Nano.

With video recording! What is also interesting about this is that they've broken the "just-before-christmas" cycle, and if they've done this, surely a new Touch can't be far away (With a camera too?!)

As far as I'm aware Apple havn't confirmed anything on the subject, and an insider of a company in Asia who made the cameras for the iPhone supposedly said tha Apple made an order of a lrge quantity, which "could only mean a new touch with camera functionality"

Question is, was that solely for the Nano, or will the Touch get a camera too?

I'm dying to find out, even though it's the iPhone I'm after upgrading too

I cant see the point in having video recording on your Nano if am honest! I mean, what phone now days doesn't have a video recording function (apart from the original Iphone) and thats bounds to be better than the camera in the Nano!

Yeah I agree, I'll try and find out the resolution etc.

But the software stuff is mega.

Seriously hard to explain, if you're into iTunes and that, download it ALL safari has to be worth trying.

On my machine the latest Safari is on a par with Firefox x86 in terms of speed.

x64 version of FF (Minefield) beats it slightly.

But the interface is great - I think I might actually keep it.

Also the iTunes is really nice, you can now change your app orders from within iTunes - which sounds gimmicky, but I've found it much easier.

It doesn't sound too bad actually, although it can't be great.

Res. is at 640 x 480 - 30fps which is respectable I would say for a slim MP3 device.

15 built in effects, records in H.264 VGA with AAC which is a shame, but hey it's Apple.

No mention of lens or megapixels, so I suspect it's a generic 0.3

However video could look OK on it's own screen, as it records at 640 x 480 but the display is only 240 x 376

So that's like half the res, although as soon as it's on a PC or Mac it's probably shocking.

I've had Safari 4 for a while now, and I really like it. its really a nice looking browser.

I'd say the iPod touch will get a camera before too long.

however i heard that Apple will stop making the iPod Classic. and if they did, then apple wouldn't have a hard drive based player at all. and that'd be a shame.

and theres just something i really don't like about flash based players.

Question - I see a lot about iTunes. What functionality does it have over a traditional classic media player program like FB2K? It seems to me that more people like it than just have iPods, but maybe I'm wrong about this.

I agree with you, I never used to use it until I got a Ipod, since then i've always used it, simply for the ease of having only one library, not 2!

Never bothered to look to see if any other software works with Ipods, I imagine there wont be much though!

Itunes isn't bad, but it does the simple stuff just fine :-)
