I am looking for a freeware backup programme to back up the whole system as well as just data. There seem to be many available - has anyone got any recommended good ones or is it a case of try it and see?

I have tried using MS backup but it seems to run out of steam at about 5-6Gb and says the file is too big. Also, I understand that it is not compatible between 98SE and XP. One of the reasons I want to backup the entire system is that I am going to add XP to the machine and want to be able to revert to 98SE in case (sorry, when) it all goes wrong.

Sounds like you want clone software rather than backup software, because you cannot backup an OS.

If you clone your current setup to an image you can revert later on if need be.

Do you not have a Windows 98SE install CD?

If you do then you won't need to clone the OS - the best bet would be to just backup all your files manually (copy and paste), including favs, e-mails, docs, music, pics, vids etc.

That way if XP doesn't work you can just pop the 98 disk in and reinstall it then put all your docs back on. When you install XP I recommend doing a fresh install rather than an upgrade when it gives you the options.

Yes I guess that would work but would take some time to reinstall 98se plus all the applications etc that have been installed over the months and years. I just thought it would be simpler to have a copy of the whole shebang and revert to that.
