I have been having some Blue screen problems and could use some help. I sent it to a friend who today sent me a the following e-mail.

Laptop is blue screening again. So far we have ran hard drive test, a memory test. Now we are doing a complete recovery on the operating system.

Do you think my computer can be saved?

Also, what does he mean by complete recovery of the operating system?

Sounds like he is reinstalling the operating system.

Yes you would. But he may also be trying to do a Repair Install. In that case you won't loose anything.

Rule #1 of sending your data to someone else is to keep another copy.

If he is doing a complete reinstall and is formatting the drive (you can reinstall right over the top but most just wipe it) you may lose your data.

How could I keep a copy if I could not even get into it once it started blue screening.

Because your supposed to have a regular copy , meaning every week - month you should make a back up copy of your files to a flash drive, secondary hd , cd etc. But I'm guessing you wouldn't know how to do this right? If not then surely you have friends who could do it for you, maybe the friend thats taking a look at your computer now.

The other answer is because you don't get a blue screen in a BIOS - if your memory is good, plenty of solutions exist for backing up data outside of Windows.

Too late for that now, though.

To late to do anything about that now.

I could still get into safe mode with the blue screen pop up..

With that said, can I send "my music" my document" ect. onto a memory stick by way of being in safe mode?

I did not hear this straight from the guy fixing my laptop, as my wife talked to him. But she thinks he told her that I needed a memory card for my Dell Insprion 2200 laptop, and that they were about $50 bucks. He is trying to find one off of another laptop that would work, so I would not need to buy one myself. The only think I could fine by way of using Goggle is this part K5198 - 64MB USB Memory key.

1. Does it sound like to you guys that this device could save everything for me?

2. With it being a USB device, will it always have to permanently remain on my laptop, or once everything is saved it can be removed?
