Try going to start>command prompt. Then type "ping www.google.com" (without the quotes) then hit enter. If it doesn't manage to connect, try typing "ping 127.0.0.1" (without quotes) and see if that works.

Let us know the results.

No offence, but what is the use of pinging your localhost

Anyway, it sounds as if your IP settings are wrong.

Go Start - Run

Type in CMD

Type in ipconfig /all

Right click and click Select All, and then press Enter.

That will copy the contents of the Command Prompt window to the clipboard. Come back to the forums here and paste the data into a new thread (right click and select Paste.)

To find where the problem is, if it's a problem with the internet connection, local will work, but google won't, if it's something wrong with the IP then neither will work. So basicly, just another narrowing down tool.

You can ping your localhost without any IP addressing set up at all. In fact, you don't even need a network card installed. Try it, disable everything in Network Connections. I cannot imagine a time when you could not ping the localhost. It gets answered before it gets to the normal network layer.

But, I agree with your point about pinging Google, as it proves if DNS is resolving. However, it is not ideal because it could be a problem with a dodgey DNS server that your router has been assigned.

The best way is to get an ipconfig /all, as that gives you a good layer to work from. If you then see that the DNS looks like it is set up right, you could get a ping result. It just kind of makes it easier for the person helping and the person without the internet.

"Internet download manager" is this a 3rd party downloader? Uninstall it in add/remove programs and use in built browser dl'er.
