Default clone my harddrive ?

sorry about the title i couldn't think how els to say it

ok soo my harddrive is making clicking sounds..most of you would tell me that's a sign of its going to die.am ok with that as its lasted a year and had windows on hit god knows how many times

my question is can i purchase a new harddrive and just make a soo called clone of my existing harddrive (slave/master) windows/picture/programs everything really
then take the old one out and use the new one
because i have got everything set up just how i like it
am sure most of you are like me and personalize everything just to your taste

i no you can make a complete backup to a different harddrive
would this work is it a simple case of just booting up to that harddrive after?

thanks for eney feedback :)

No problems.

Are you going to try one of the freeware cloning softwares or do you have Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image?

I can recommend Acronis True Image .... very simple/easy to use.

If you read serverguy's link, it will tell you why you cant just use back up software and why you need to make an image of the drive :

Default clone my harddrive ?

What "I" would do in this situation, and desperate to keep XP on my HDD is create an IMAGE, burn it on bunch of DVDs then i will insert the image on my new HDD. if that doesn't work and your not desperate for XP, copy all your importent folders to an External HDD...

I'd go for the first one though

Why would you do that? It would be much quicker just to clone the drive. And you would still need software to do what you want so you're not saving anything.

Cloning the drive is the same as creating an image of the drive, which is what you are suggesting and what serverguy has already advised ..... what are you not sure of ??
