HI

Does anyone know where you can get some software to convert a .gif file to an .ico file ? My wife has a PC using Win XP but really likes the icons they use on her new laptop, which uses Win Vista. She wants to be able to copy them over from her laptop and use them on her Win XP but needs to change them from .gif to .ico format.......or so she says !

i often had this trouble although i never did try this, rename the file as a .ico and see if that works, its a slim chance but i have never tried it

Hi dfr:

I done a similar thing in the past using the Win-XP icons in Win 2000 and it's very simple to do...

XP and 2000 are storing the icons in the "shell32.dll" file (C:>Windows>System32>shell32.dll). I'm not sure about Vista as I haven't used it yet but I would expect it to be similar. You can't replace or delete the shell32.dll file while Windows is running, but you can copy the shell32.dll file from Vista (or whatever the file is called) onto the XP machine and store it in My Documents for instance. Than change the properties of each and every single icon on your desktop and point them to the new shell32.dll file.

Note that this will only work with desktop icons though.

hadn't thought of that.....shall go and see what the Vista equivalent is for shell32.dll !!!
