Default hard drive space error

im having problems with my hard drive space. on my main partition, which is 87.8gb, my computer is telling me 39.1 gb is being used. when i enter my drive, highlight all my folders(including hidden), it tells me i have a grand total of 16.2gb of information. my question is where has the other 23gb gone? any ideas? i am using AVG 8.0 anti virus, which has only detected a voyager.agent, and dealt with it accordingly? help! i am running windows vista 32bit SP1. my laptop is less than a day old!!!!!!!!

Go to start menu then right click on the My Computer, then click on Manage.

A window will pop up. On the left hand side there is a menu, click on the disk management tab.

Have a look through there and see if you can locate the remaining 23GB.

Also, when you boot up try pressing the Delete key or F12, or something similar to enter the setup BIOS screen. It could be that the partition is not active or something strange.

Let me know how you get on.
Sam

Many new laptops and desktops come with a partitioned 'recovery' area for if you need to wipe the whole thing and start over.

Did you do a disk cleanup?
Did you include hidden files?
Have you run checkdisk?
Have you deleted all those restore points that rapidly fill the drive? (other tab on disk cleanup)

If your used space is really varying by that much there must be something seriously wrong! It takes Windoze a while to add up all those file sizes, and each file wastes a bit of disk space, but that variation is incomprehensible!
