Default Hardware or Software Problem?

Well I have my first issue with my new pc. I've tried everything I know to do except reformat.

Just got the PC put together, gigabyte P35C Motherboard running Vista 64 bit.

Today is my second day using the computer. I have most of my stuff installed on it, so recommend reformatting as a last resort. I didn't know if this was a hardware or software issue.

I was installing a program called "Guitar Rig 2.0" by native instruments, after I had everything set up, I went into the settings to change the input audio to 44000 mhz or something like that, I just adjusted one of the numbers in the settings from like 20000 to 44000, if that rings a bell to anyone. The program stopped responding, I couldn't reopen it. If i tried to reopen it to re-adjust the setting back to where it was, it would just stop responding and ask me to submit an error report to microsoft.

So, I tried uninstalling it, and then reinstalling it. No go. Then I tried deleting the application data for it that I could find thinking that would reset it. No go. Up to this point, I thought the only problem was not being able to get this stupid program to work.

After uninstalling, I decided to reboot. So, I do, and everything loads properly until my desktop loads. After logging in, my desktop begins loading and I cannot click anything. CTRL+SHIFT+ESCAPE brings up a white screen, if I click the start button it turns into a white box, if I click anywhere on the screen, the cursor turns to the loading cursor and does nothing. The only tasks I can perform is CTRL + ALT + DEL to log off my user name, switch users, shut down, restart etc....

Now, I didn't know what to do, I had booted into this unresponsive desktop four times and was sick of it. I decided to go into safe mode to see what was up. Long story short I ended up going back 5 hours from when the incident occurred. After it was done loading the save point, the desktop froze again.

Now, I went into my bios (delete) and put it into "Fail Safe" mode, and got on my pc now (this is actually the method I'm using to type this message). It works fine and fast here.

So, thinking I'd found a cure I was all happy and restarted the pc to find the same problem.
, so I booted into safe mode and restored back to this morning

I can't figure out if this is hardware or software related The case is open and I see nothing wrong, temps are stable, but i've also restored back to before I had the problem, so what do I do now?

Very tired, can't stay awake any longer, please PM or e-mail me if you have any advice / questions ty so much

I'd say software. Driver.

Default Hardware or Software Problem?

Well, I restored the computer back to 5 hours before I installed the driver. That should've eliminated that as a possibility. Also, loading fail-safe mode, is hardware related, is it not? So, if my pc works in fail safe mode 50% of the time, but doesn't work without fail-safe mode at all, wouldn't it be hardware related?

And what do I need to do to fix this? Any suggestions?

I read it as you've found a stable point in the history of save points
maybe I misread, it's not stable still is that what you're saying?

Default Hardware or Software Problem?

Correct. System is still unstable. I'm able to get it to work successfully maybe 30% of the time. For example, 20 minutes ago, I rebooted after the system being on for about 8 hours because I didn't want to shut it down because I knew it would act up. After I rebooted it (clicked Install Updates then Shut Down), windows loaded, I logged in, my desktop began loading, then I couldn't do anything. As soon as I clicked anything, the cursor would immediately turn into the loading cursor then the system would be unresponsive to any other mouse/keyboard input aside from ctrl+alt+del and ctrl+shift+esc.

So, I rebooted, pressed delete on boot to get to bios, chose "Load Fail-Safe Defaults" then the system rebooted, again an unsuccessful load. So I rebooted again without going into bios and selecting "Load Fail-Safe Default", and it loaded fine. I'm typing this message from the computer.

I don't know what to do. I'm trying to uninstall the mouse drivers I think that may have screwed it up, but I don't know how, I'm in the c/program files/razer/copperhead folder where their installed, and I try deleting the folder and get the following error:

"You need permission to perform this action: Try again - Skip - Cancel"

What do I do?

boot a linux (ubuntu probably) live CD 32bit and see if it loads fine several times. If so, it's obviously not a hardware issue
it's most likely a driver issue and if you have no valid save points you're probably going to have to last-resort it.
64bit and drivers in general aren't good at getting along.

If it is a driver issue, there is no way of eliminating the drivers I installed, (even though the driver for the razer mouse were intended for 64 bit OS's) without reformatting, just to test and see if it works like normal?

Should I install Vista 32 Bit? Or reinstall 64 bit and try the mouse drivers and the guitar rig program first to see if it works? I'm going to try Linux today when I get home.

If I system restored back to two days before all of this happened, I don't understand what the problem would be? Does system restore not change certain things that could be effecting this? And why does only happen about 3-5 times out of 10 boots? Nothing makes sense. As I said I've done everything I know to do, I'm still relatively inexperienced with Vista, but I've never seen anything like this.

Thanks for all the help.

i suggest installing vista 32 bit and install that program, so u can tell whether it was vist 64 bit playin up or whether the program was faulty.

Good luck mate

system restore is finicky sometimes
if Ubunutu 32 is working well, then I'd suggest an overhaul, try 32bit vista
it really stinks when stuff like that happens, but better now than later right
