please help i've got a HP Pavilion with Vista 32bit with 3GB RAM and Intel Core Duo.

About a month a go i tried to download a system update and it said that it couldn't check for updates and failed. the same goes for MSN and AVG so i feel slightly unprotected. I dunno wether i downloaded something infected but its just bad. Now nothing updates at all... not even games.
I thought also it might be internet connection but that is really quick and is fine. i'm the second computer out of two on a network and connect to a router on the main computer through a USB thingy.
Please help. Thanks
