hi people
i need help, i had to system restore my computer last week ,compaq presario, which worked ok, but now i cannot access my programs files seem to be missing all over the place!

i only really need my interent working, the program and drivers wont uninstall or reinstall, or work! the icons are still there but cant find certain files.

i think its the software for the modem as it is not showing in add/remove hardware

is there anyway i can totally reset the computer and start installing again?

i have no restore points

any help would be GREAT!!

If you used the Compaq Recovery, it should have restored your PC back to factory settings .... or did you use something else ?

Is the Modem a Broadband USB Modem or internal ?

Being as you did a restore you will need to install the drivers for all your hardware.

If the ones you have do not work go online with another machine and get the correct drivers from Compaq.

its a usb modem and works with the software on the internet providers cd, but it wont install, or uninstall, it was the campaq recovery using f10,

i donno what to do..

So, when you use the CD that came with your modem what happens, any error messgaes?

Saying it just won't install is too vague.

Being a USB modem you will also need to plug it in only after installing the drivers, plugging it in prior with cause problems.

Are you logged in with Admin privelages ?

well when you click the icon as you usually would it would say ...xx file not found, so i installed the cd on another computer and copied all the programs over onto my faultly computer, it now has all the files it couldnt find, but now you click it and does nothing..

uninstalling and installing says that cannot find file registry, and installation is the cancelled, thats with usb unplugged

it works fine up till then
it shows no modem or drivers on control panel at network and hardware, like it does on the other computer.

What exactly is the error message that appears?
Do any of your programs work?
Have you run an anti virus scan (if it will work that is) ? you may have an exe. association problem or a virus

You could try exefix_xp.com utility it may solve the problem
