Hi All
Need a bit of help......well quite a bit really!!

First of all my anti virus (Norton) has elapsed and need advice on what to get next??

Secondly I tried to install a simulator programme yesterday and kept getting 'Error 2890'.......first time ever that I have even seen this......wot is it and how do I get rid of it...someone said it had something to do with the 'registry'??

Please be gentle with me.....i'm an oldie....things will have to be explained to me very very slowly, in A B C terms only, and then I might still not 'get it'.

Would appreciate your time and advice.

Terry

OK, just the AV bit (from another oldie).

Go to free.grisoft.com and download AVG Free Edition, one of the best antivirus products around.

If you want spyware protection, get spyware blaster and update it regularly (free).

For a firewall, get zonealarm free.

You will need to properly address your Norton removal. Norton is notorious for being very difficult to remove.
Click here for the Norton Removal Tool

AVG is OK but I prefer Avast! Home Free. It is lighter on system resources then AVG.
Avast! Home Free
It will protect your web browsing, e-mail, p2p, Instant Messaging and is real time protection.

Error 2890

If not could you give the whole message.

Windoze is notorious for rejecting installations of programs that were OK a few months ago! For instance, I bought Norton Ghost a year or so ago and it installed fine on XP. Now, will it install? Hell!

There are ways you can fool the installer into thinking you have a different operating system. Find the main program that installs your simulator, right click it and choose properties. Then choose compatibility and change to an earlier version of Windoze. Then try again.

Of course, chances are that an important file somewhere in Windoze has been updated and is now incompatible with your sim.

Oh, and about AVG vs Avast! I have used both many times. Let's just say that I haven't once experienced AVG locking up a system the way Avast has, but they are both OK. I only use Norton now because it is included with my ISP subscription to BTBroadband, otherwise I have hundreds of satisfied customers with AVG!

I agree wholeheartedly with the recommendation to use the Norton removal tool BTW.

Login to their site and I am sure they will sort out your problems better than we can. After all, they wrote the simulator!

A: For the Home user AVG has become too bloated. Do some looking around, you will see many agree with this. They are following Norton in having more interest given to Corporate Security. I don't blame them, that is where the BIG money is.

B: You do know you are breaking the AVG EULA don't you? Unless you are selling the customers paid subscriptions from AVG.
I'm not trying to take a shot at you there. Knowledge is a good thing.

Hey, don't jump to conclusions! I am not selling AVG! All I am doing is encouraging customers (for my services) to use AVG, which can only help AVG.
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single computer use only. The use of AVG Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is not for use with any type of OEM bundling with software, hardware components, or any other services.
  • Your use of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition shall be in accordance with and is subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition License Agreement that accompanies AVG Free.
I think the bloatware in AVG comes from the paid versions. The free version is wonderfully simple and effective. I have also read good reviews of Avast but after a per freeze ups I ditched it. Mind you, that was a paid subscription and not a free copy.

My philosophy is to try them all and see, but Norton won't install unless you remove everything else. Even more important is not to pay for what you can get for free. Hence I have ditched M$ Office for OpenOffice and never recommend the former now.
