That's the point of Torbutton. Turn it off when regularly browsing. As for when it should be on, if it's not working make sure Privoxy is also on, and you have enabled it.

For that guy who says that blah blah illegal and proxys...well have you thought that maybe, proxies enhance your security so when your on a forum full of hackers you can't be traced by idiots who like to ruin peoples computers?

also, it works now, but goes VERY slow. VERY VERY slow. And when i open up google it opens up in a different language everytime, one time its german, another time its french. Im not really liking this proxy, I dont see how people use it. Is Tor the only one? how can i speed it up. Can I make a proxy my self with my schools IP adress?

there are millions of proxy servers. use software like ProxyWay to test many at a time for good one and take out the bad ones. the reason a proxy will always be slower is that the data you get must be first downloaded to the proxy server itself and then sent from it to you. As for your schools address, i don't think that would be wise.

There's a link on the multi-lingual version of google to go to English, if you hit that it'll set a cookie and auto-set it next time

What Cheese said is correct. You can try other proxies like at Xroxy.com, but proxies are going to be slow.

This is incorrect. Your IP address is not your social security number, it's more like your license plate number. Anyone can see it, it has very little bearing on your security, and while with a subpoena someone could trace it to you, that would take tons of legal paperwork and for the most part the only thing identifiable with an IP is your general location or city.

why would you WANT to make yourself a proxy? the ISP on it would be the same if its on the same Internet connection. My friend was a victim of some hi anonymous proxy hosting. in other words, somehow people used his computer as a proxy and by the nature and way a proxy works he got a HDD full of things that were not his.

There are many legit reason to use a proxy cheese.

For example I use Google through a proxy a lot to see where this site ranks through the eyes of a USA visitor, Goggle shows different results to different country IPs.
