| I heard that you can decrease the amount of paging that's done in a system, but how is that done via the os in terms of software? i don't mean anything technical such as taking the system apart - just some on screen configuration? |

| Elaborate a bit more on what you mean by paging .... do you mean page file usage ... i.e. virtual ram ?

| Higher pagefile size will decrease the number of times you have to page, but that's about it.

| Paging slows down computers. Yes i mean virtual memory stuff yah. So i want least as possible because the more paging leads to more hard drive space being used and thus processes are being slower in execution than normal. |

| No it doesn't, the pagefile size is fixed.

| The biggest drawback to paging is the speed, it's incredibly slow. The best way to make sure that your system pages to virtual memory as little as possible is by upgrading your system ram. An XP system with 3GB of ram or a Vista system with 4GB of ram will rarely need to page to the disk and will run much faster as a result. Keep in mind that, no matter how much memory you have, the system will ALWAYS page some information to disk no matter what you do. Windows Vista is a lot better than XP at pagefile management and you'll actually have less paging under a properly configured Vista system than an XP one. <Links removed, do not spam> |

| Ok, this subject has always puzzled me. When I was building this computer, I had a problem and called Microsoft Technical (non)Support. Habib in Delhi told me i needed to set aside 2X's the amount I had in RAM. After reading the comments here and about 3/4's of the link philthomas provided, i decided that maybe I needed to change that to zero. HOWEVER the last entry in that link states: How to disable virtual memory in windows vista or windows XP? To disable virtual memory or paging files, simply set no paging files on all drives. However it is always recommended that you don’t disable or delete the paging file. So what should I set mine at? I could really use that 16GB of HDD space.............. (I have 8 GB's of RAM). |

Mine was default at 256MB or something on my old PC, but I shoved it up to 2GB because I had a shameful 1GB of actual RAM, with Vista. ![]() - I know, but I was stupid when I bought it, and I thought because 1GB was reccommended minimum I'd save some money and not pay £150 for an extra GB.. (It was alot more expensive then though I guess..) Anywho, point is I'd just set it very very low if I were you. Or just go for "Let my system increase the size as and when it needs it" Or whatever it's called, that way it probably never will increase it, it won't need to.
