Default I need to track my computer's temperature--how?

Well, when my son comes to visit for Christmas, he tinkers with my computer. Thus, I don't have what I used to---a sensor that was telling me how hot my computer is getting.

And....it appears my CPU fan is malfunctioning AGAIN....so I really need a recommendation for a free sensor I can upload to know if my fan is coming on soon enough according to the temperature it shows. I used to have one--just can't remember the name.

Or, on the other side of the coin, I need a temp sensor to know if I NEED TO TURN MY COMPUTER OFF---grrrr----since it's getting too hot and the CPU fan is not working correctly. Help.

p.s. Would I be correct in assuming my fan is not working well if the temp gets over 70 degrees with no fan coming on???

I know SOMETHING is going on because the first two times I tried to turn on the computer, I got the CPU warning on a black screen and the computer shut off. The third time is a charm...but boy that fan seems to go off quickly....and not come on for a long time.
