Hi,
I've heard that operating systems can be put on USB's. I want to try and bring my own OS to school. Is it true that you need to change the BIOS settings to make it boot from a USB? Also, if I were to bring it to school, everyone has a user account which logs them onto some kind of network. If I used my own OS, would I be able to log into that account, or would I be stuck with the account on the OS?
Thanks for any help.

It depends on how the boot order is set, really. Most computers will go ahead and boot off the stick, but some might require BIOS changes. Most school admins won't lock down the BIOS though.

Unless you have a huge thumb drive, I'd stick a Linux distro on there. No hassle with the accounts, likely the networking would work fine with minimal setup.

You wouldn't be able to access your school account becuase the domains would not be set up and the network drives won't have been mapped.

Asuming your school is like ours and my previous school whereby you either log onto the student, staff, mannet (admin) domain or 'This Computer'.

It depends what your IT admins are like, if they do lock out the BIOS, which I will have to disagree with carbon about, every IT admin I have come across in a school lock it out, you probably won't be able to use it, as if they have done that, they have probably also made sure the only possible boot up is via the OS they have on the machines, if however they haven't, then it should be possible, however you won't be able to log onto the account you have setup there. But also bear in mind, I don't know how happy the IT admins would be if you load your own OS onto the computers.

Mmm. Based on what you guys are saying, there is a chance that:
1) I won't be able to boot from my USB at all
or
2) I could boot from my USB but not use my school account

Yea, my school is like that. We have our own network drives too, like 30mb each. Ahh well, I guess it's a lost cause then...
Thanks for the help everyone.

Why not just try it?...

Or you could even ask the techies?

Since there is very little to no chance of it working, I don't think it would be wise to do it, as it would be a waste of time.

Wouldent that run into errors with drivers because you installed the OS (Operating System) on a different computer?
