Default Internet Proxy Software

Hi, i've to setup internet for a school and the users will have individual logons. Is there a way of recording what they are looking at on the internet, blocking sites and content, and linking the time it was accessed to the user. There a lot of software out there ...

Wingate

You're probably going to want some sort of proxy server to manage everything going out and coming in. Which is what Wingate is.

You can buy keylogging software or download free ones but are limited in what they record. It's what my old school done

thanks for your replies. I'll look into the wingate option and the keylogging. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry for late reply. Off work on a Monday.

If you can justify the cost of Wingate it is a very nice way of doing it. I think they do cheaper educational licence as well.

I have used it before for a youth club and it went very well. It is also used at my school.

The way it is set up is that all of the internet comes in through it. It has to run on its own box.

Whenever nything asks for anything over the internet it will try to authenticate them. If they are not allready authenticated it will give them a popup to type in a username and password. Then they have access depending on what their rights are.

You can have different groups for usernames and define permissions on a group per group basis. The content filtering built into it is good as well and will block sites depending on what you want blocked.

It is also good because there is no way of avoiding it, you can't get on the internet without authenticating with it unlike with local monitoring systems.

I am pretty sure it also keeps logs of exactly what pages users have visited so you can check that out if needed.

If it is too expensive or not what you are after you could look for a Linux based firewall / proxy.

Smoothwall comes to mind first and is my personal favourite allthough there are others available.

There are lots of addins you can put on top of Smoothwall like DansGuardian that will filter out dodgey / unwanted websites but it is not as plug and play as Wingate and not as good at user authentication. Although I am sure there are addons that will get the same functionaity out of it as Wingate.
