Hi,
My original 40G Western Digital hard drive died and was replaced with a new 80G WD HDD and reinstalled WinXP Home edition with all the appropriate updates. While every thing else is functioning ok, there are two problems when the PC sits idle for long periods (one or more hours) and when the Power Options are set to 'Turn off Monitor' and 'Turn off Hard disks'. The first is that after an idle period I must reboot each time to get my DSL connection activated and the second is that clock in the system tray loses up to four hours on the hour digit only and requires resetting each time. The only conflict on my PC exists in the Internet Properties Dialog box under '(!) Phishing filter' and I cant relate that to the problem.
Thanks
Stanlee

Hi

The problem of the time could be with the CMOS battery because it is the one that is dealing with time on the system, that is why you may think of replacing the battery. But always remember to use the same type of the battery.

Must admit I saw this post the other day and nothing came to mind.

CMOS battery could be a cause tho', well spotted.

Ok, I was able to play around a bit and I got the Time problem sorted out. It was more like an oversight than a problem. It was an incorrect Time Zone setting, the adjustment sorted that out, but I cant make any headway with the the oversleeping of the DSL connection and shutting down after use.

Could be a USB port problem, have seen many a computer have their USB ports mess about.

Currently my printer only prints if I send a document to it then unplug the USB and connect it before the print job is canceled.

Had this happen on my old PC with a different printer and it was the USB ports on the mainboard, not drivers just a hardware fault.

I will either put up with it until I upgrade to Dual Core or get a USB PCI card (about £15).

Dave.
