Hi Mike:

Maybe it's just me who's being daft, but I'm kinda lost plot a bit reading trough your question... Could you please start over again with that one and make sure you provide the following information:

With reboot, did you mean whipe the harddrive clean (which I would suspect as you mentione you want to sell the PC so you need to get your data off) or were you simply going trough a restart of system?

Which OS was running on your PC when everything was runnig fine? Were you using Windows and if so which version?

Where does Ubuntu come into play?

What is happening now? Does your screen simply stay blank? Is your system beeping? Is there any message at all appearing on the screen and if so what does it say?

The more info you can provide the better people will be able to give you some solid advise on how to recover your system.

Cheers:
Chris

hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. basically i tried to wipe my computer so that i could sell i, It runs on windows xp. The reason i chose not to carry out the wipe was because I realised that I had no other form of operating system to install as my cd is at home, me being at uni. I decided i'd go back to wiping it once i had ubuntu on a disk ready to install after the wipe, restarted the computer and it was just a toally black screen, no effort to restart at all.

from what your saying it sounds like nothing is happening when you start it. It could be that a cable is not in right or something has come out in the case. if what you are saying is that the computer starts and the monitor is just not responding it could be that there is something wrong ith the monitor. the last thing is it could be that you wiped it by mistake. if none of these the i would go to the nearest repair shop and ask them to have a look.

P.S. sorry if my ideas sound like i'm calling you stupid it's just allot of people miss these things

If it got wiped by mistake, wouldn't the system complain of not finding an OS as bootup?

Appart from that, I could't agree more. If there is something wrong with the hardware inside, you should at least get a beepcode. Absolutely nothing means that nothing is happening.

I would indeed check the cabling on the monitor. If that is not the issue, open up the case and check if the fans are spinning if you switch the PC on. If not, yuu might want to check all the connectors inside an possibly check the PSU as well. However, if there are no problems to be found inside the case, try a different moitor if you got that opportunity.

Yeah i suppose you're right. You need to post exactly what happens then we might be able to help you. if not then calling up tech support (even though they are useless) could help.
