I'm trying to register to an on-line forum and I got a Java Script error. After I clicked "yes" a few times on the little java error box I seemed to be able to go forward with my registration, or, I thought so. Now there is no way I can register - my information isn't getting through to the web site. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Java errors I was getting to begin with.

Does anyone know what may be causing this? Or, is there some way I can check to see if my Java (whatever that is?) is working properly.

Thanks,

Gary

Have you tried reinstalling your Java?

Step 1 - Get the new version
  • Go to the Sun Java Download Page
  • On the Sun Java page scroll to the 5th download. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
  • Click the button and choose the options.
    • Platform Windows
    • Language English
    • Next place a check mark in the box to agree to the License Agreement.
  • "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Step 2 - Remove old version(s)
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Uninstall Java (TM) 6 Update 5 and any other old versions.
  • Do not remove Java 6 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each old Java version.
  • Restart your computer once all Java components are removed.
Step 3 - Remove old folder(s)
  • Double click My Computer on the desktop, Locate this folder: C:\Program Files\Java
  • Open the Java folder and delete any subfolders except the jre1.6.0_06 folder which was just created by the newest Java installation.

Can we find out if this is a Java Script error or a Javascript error? The advice above is relevant to the former, but scripting in Java (ie, controlling HTML content via Java) and Javascript are both highly browser dependent.

Thus, we need to establish what browser you are using and what the forum is, to see if it is Java or Javascript.

Whatever the case, the JRE is still used.

OK what I said wasn't clear. What I meant was:

Scenario 1: Javascript is being used, no Java, hence JRE irrelevant

Scenario 2: Java is being used, no Javascript. There is a Java error.

Scenario 3: Javascript is being used to script Java and a Javascript error occurs.

Scenario 4: Javascript is being used to script Java and a Java error occurs.

We don't know yet!
