I recently had to re-install windows on my laptop and since doing so I whenever I turn on my laptop after it has been on the "sleep" setting which it normally is on the connection to the internet takes longer than it used to. What usually happens now is that it appers to be connected when switched on then disconnects then re-connects again.

Sounds to me like since re-install you havn't installed the software that came from the company making the network card/adapter, I had a similar situation when it took longer because Windows was manually detecting it, and getting its knickers in a twist wondering what to do with it.
Basically if you install the software that originally came with it, it will detect it very quickly because it knows exactly what it's looking for, and will connect almost instantly (When I had the problem the difference really was from about 10 mins down to 10 secs..)

Like has been said probably either a driver or piece of dedicated software missing. What is the laptop?

well, you can check windows updates (start>programs>windows update) and you can check the network card updates, by finding your card on the manufacturers website and downloading and installing the latest drivers from there.

If that came with your router then you'll just have to differentiate between the router software and wireless software. As its Netgear, I'll have a look for a download if that makes it easier, I have it myself so I should be able to find some stuff wuite easily if that makes it easier (CDs can be a nightmare.. I lose half of mine..) I'll add a link to download in my next post.
